It has been said that urban survival gear is incomplete if it doesn’t include any survival weapon. But are firearms really a good choice during an emergency? The answer is yes. However, the more important question to be asked is, do you have the guts to shoot or kill someone for your safety?
The answer to this question may vary. Regardless, it is important to keep in mind that keeping survival weapons is not that necessary, but it undoubtedly gives you an edge. If in case you choose to keep one, remember that there are certain things to consider. The following are some of the survival weapons and their proper usage.
Handguns are close-ranged weapons. They are best effective in shooting targets at, well, close range. The type of handgun most suitable for urban survival is a 9mm. That’s because it is relatively affordable. Compared to other handguns, l bullets to a 9mm is a lot easier. And so, anyone who even has no experience with any firearm can fire a 9mm.
For personal defense, shotgun is probably the most recommended survival weapon. The sound of a shotgun firing is enough to scare people or wild animals. In choosing a shotgun, choose from either 12 gauge or 22 gauge range. The barrel of this firearm should be between 18 to 22 inches.
People with smaller physiques and quite dainty can go for a 20GA or 410GA with a barrel of 18-inch. They should also be equipped with an autoloader or a pump action. The appearance of the double-barrel gun is good. But in times of serious trouble or emergency, the autoloader proves to be better.
Rifles are a far-ranged weapon used in shooting at a distance of more than 100 yards. Before anyone can fire a rifle, a lot of serious practice is required. But during emergencies, you should opt for a rifle that can be used by all grownup members of the family. Another advantage of rifles is that they are highly accessible and are very easy to use.
Other types of survival weapons fall under the category of improvised weapons. These include the 9-iron golf club, kitchen knives, baseball bats and short-handled shovels. These are alternatives for those who can’t afford or are not interested with firearms.
